Fox News quickly picked up the story, grinding the event into outrage gruel for their conservative viewers who demanded repercussions for the injustice. The band soon found itself trending on social media and facing real-life consequences.
Video footage of NOFX’s Vegas show wound up on TMZ three days after their performance.
The outrage pendulum swung back and forth like this until it eventually struck, of all people, four idiots in a punk band. In turn, right-wingers were clapping back at comedian Samantha Bee for calling Ivanka Trump a “feckless cunt,” for which she ultimately issued an apology.

That same week, Roseanne Barr was facing public blowback for a tweet in which she likened Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett to an ape, resulting in ABC canceling her TV show. On any other day, this likely would’ve passed as another example of NOFX being punk’s boorish jesters, but the news cycle was in a particularly weird place that week in 2018. A documentary was once made about them touring the world, doing the things they’re best known for: namely, snorting copious amounts of drugs and visiting S&M clubs. The cover of one of their most famous albums, 1996’s Heavy Petting Zoo, features a man sexually pleasuring a sheep. They later encored their four-night run with a rocking “Harry Hood. For those who haven’t been following NOFX over their 36-year existence, they’ve made a career out of crude jokes. Phish returned to their own identities for their third and final set, which opened with “Carini”> “Lonely Trip.” Tracks like “Inner Reached Of Outer” and “The Howling” included pyrotechnics, and set-closer “I Am In Miami” saw the band crowd around a single microphone, with Anastasio leading them exclusively on acoustic guitar. The set opened with “Knuckle Bone Broth Avenue” and all of the new cuts contained lyrics save for “9th Cube.” The Sci-Fi Soldier comic included Easter-Egg allusions to Phish’s Baker’s Dozen run, Trey Anastasio’s Madison Square Garden platform mishap and more, as it tells the tale of a team of heroes in the year 4680: Clueless Wallob (Anastasio), Pat Malone (Page McConnell), Paulie Roots (Jon Fishman) and Half-Nelson (Mike Gordon).Īccording to, for their second set, “the band performed in elaborate costumes (helmets and all), with alternate instruments, each playing within a flashing/glowing shape (two circles and two squares), after descending (in the form of holograms) from the ceiling in cylinders of colored light.” The outing was not unlike their Kasvot Växt set on Halloween 2018, which included an album’s worth of new material, much of which remains in the Phish live rotation.
Their Sci-Fi Solider set arrived with a 14-page comic book, handed out to fans as they entered Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Arena on Oct. Photos by Rene Huemer, via once again used their Halloween costume set to debut a slew of new music (and new alter-egos).
